2022 Seniors Month/Introduction of the New Seniors' Advocate

Every June, Newfoundland and Labrador celebrates seniors. It is a time set aside to recognize the many contributions of seniors, and to show appreciation. I cannot think of a more fitting time for me to begin my work as the province’s new Seniors’ Advocate.

My name is Susan Walsh and I assumed my new role on June 15. Over my 31 year career I have worked directly with seniors in many capacities: as parents with adult children with disabilities, as individuals living in institutions, as couples needing home supports or access to residential options and completing adult protection investigations. All with the vision of improved access to services. I have also worked in frontline management, policy development and in Executive levels of the Provincial Government helping to shape policies and programs. I believe that learning never stops so I am looking forward to hearing from NL’s seniors; listening to what seniors and their supporters want me to know. I am truly honoured to be appointed to this role and do not take lightly the responsibility I have assumed to be the voice for seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Because it is Seniors’ Month I want to reaffirm my commitment to seniors to accurately represent your concerns and to make strong recommendations to government on how programs and services might be enhanced to better-meet your needs.

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is how resilient we are. So in these final days of Seniors’ Month 2022, let’s show our resilience through kindness and by celebrating seniors for their many contributions to their families, communities and this province.

Sincerely,

Susan Walsh
Seniors' Advocate
